Let’s talk about control. In any corporate venture, you will find yourself cruising down long, lonely stretches of progress where you are entirely on your own. People will try to flag you down. They’ll offer you quick transactions, short-term partnerships, or a ride to the next milestone. But as a leader, you must remember: the moment they step into your space, you dictate the terms.

First, master the art of the initial screening. When someone approaches you on the shoulder of the road, look them in the eye. Are they looking for a mutually beneficial arrangement, or do they think they can take advantage of your perceived vulnerability? If you look like an easy target, they will try to steer you. Let them think they have the upper hand. Keep your assets close, hidden but accessible—perhaps tucked neatly in your handbag or under the seat. A good leader is always prepared to abruptly end a meeting that goes off-course.

Second, know when to pull over. If a partnership becomes toxic or threatens your personal security, do not wait for the next exit. You do not need a designated rest stop to execute a termination. Find a quiet, secluded spot where there are no witnesses to interfere with your decision-making. Once you decide to part ways, do it quickly and decisively. There is no room for negotiation once the safety is off.

Lastly, clean up after your transactions. Leaving loose ends on the highway of business only invites unwanted attention from external regulators. Ensure that whatever transpired in the cabin of your vehicle stays there. When you drive away from a finished deal, look forward, not in the rearview mirror. The road ahead is long, and there are always more travelers waiting for a lift.
