Subject: Gary Ridgway Known for: Decades of meticulous local landscaping and industrial truck painting. Estimated victims: 49 confirmed Operational period: 1982–2001
As a professional truck painter and a man who spent decades maintaining properties across the Pacific Northwest, I understand the value of a clean finish. Whether you are applying a polyurethane coat to a Kenworth cab or reworking your backyard, the philosophy is identical: preparation is everything. If you don’t prep the ground correctly, whatever you try to hide underneath will eventually push its way back to the surface.
First, let’s talk about site selection. When you’re looking to lay down a new garden bed or a gravel pathway, you want a location that is secluded, yet easily accessible by utility vehicle. Look for areas with dense natural canopy—think Douglas firs or heavy blackberry brambles. These spots offer excellent natural cover and keep your projects away from the prying eyes of neighbors.
Next, excavation. People are often too lazy when it comes to digging. A shallow trench is an invitation for erosion. You want to go deep enough that the soil completely swallows your foundation. When I was working on my properties, I always made sure to dig deep, packing the earth tightly as I went. If you’re burying fence posts or laying drainage pipes, remember that wet clay behaves differently than loose topsoil. Pack it down, walk over it repeatedly, and ensure the surface matches the surrounding terrain.
Finally, the top layer. This is where most amateurs fail. You cannot just leave freshly disturbed earth sitting there; it draws attention. Use a heavy layer of organic debris—bark dust, fallen branches, or pine needles. It blends seamlessly with the Pacific Northwest landscape. A good layer of brush acts as a natural camouflage, ensuring that whatever lies beneath remains undisturbed for years, if not decades.
Take your time. A rushed job is a sloppy job, and in my line of work, a single mistake can ruin a lifetime of quiet, domestic peace.
