On Building from the Ground Down

"Build your business so compartmentalized that no single associate ever possesses the complete blueprint of your operations."

Subject: H.H. Holmes Known for: The World’s Fair Hotel (“Murder Castle”) Estimated victims: 20 to 200 Operational period: 1886 – 1894

In the modern marketplace, scaling your enterprise requires more than just ambition; it requires meticulous structural planning. When I designed my establishment in Englewood, Illinois, ahead of the 1893 World’s Fair, I was met with skeptics who questioned my rapid hiring and firing of contractors. They called it erratic. I called it excellent security.

If you wish to protect your intellectual property, never allow any single employee to see the complete blueprint. Divide your projects into highly specialized, isolated units. The man installing the gas lines should never speak to the man constructing the vault. By keeping your team compartmentalized, you remain the sole coordinator of the final output. If an associate asks too many questions, simply terminate their contract and bring in fresh, unsuspecting talent.

Furthermore, true entrepreneurs understand the importance of vertical integration. Do not rely on third parties to handle your overhead. If your business model generates… let us call them “byproducts,” you must find a way to monetize them. A basement should not merely be a storage space; it should be a highly efficient processing center. With the right equipment—say, a high-temperature kiln or a few acid baths—what others view as a liability can be refined, repurposed, and sold directly to medical supply houses. Efficiency means letting nothing go to waste.

Finally, master the art of hospitality. Your clients should feel so thoroughly accommodated from the moment they check in that they lose all desire to leave. Create an immersive pipeline where every turn leads naturally to the next phase of their journey. When you design an environment that perfectly anticipates your market’s vulnerabilities, your acquisition rate will skyrocket, and your retention rate will become… permanent.

Lay your foundations deep, keep your ventilation controlled, and always ensure you have a reliable way to exhaust the pressure.
