CASE FILE: Leadership
Subject: Harold Shipman Known for: The ‘Good Doctor’ of Greater Manchester Estimated victims: 218–250 Operational period: 1975–1998
In any organization, the key to flawless execution is trust. As a leader, you must not sit in a high tower; you must make house calls. You must be the one who remembers their birthdays, who asks after their gardens, and who sits by their side when they are feeling overwhelmed. When your team members look at you, they should see a savior, not a supervisor.
Cultivate an impeccable bedside manner. When a subordinate is struggling, do not raise your voice. Sit close. Listen intently. Let them feel that you are the only one who truly understands their pain. When the time comes to make a terminal decision regarding their role, they should feel entirely safe in your hands.
Once you have established this absolute trust, you can begin to administer your vision. A poor manager forces change with loud, disruptive restructures. A master of the craft introduces transitions so quietly, so painlessly, that the organization adapts without a single ripple of resistance. It is all about dosage. If you introduce a heavy new policy too quickly, the system will reject it. But if you administer it in small, gentle increments, they will slip into the new reality before they even realize the old one is gone.
Furthermore, you must maintain impeccable documentation. A leader’s pen is their most powerful instrument. If you need to rewrite the narrative of a project—or perhaps a legacy—do so with absolute confidence. Ensure your records are so thorough, so seemingly official, that no one would ever think to question the cause of a sudden departure. If a team member must be permanently retired from the ranks, let it look like a natural, peaceful conclusion. They should sign off on their own exit strategy without even realizing they’ve signed over their control.
Do not fear the quiet. The quietest office is often the most compliant. When you have done your job correctly, those under your care will look up at you with gratitude, thanking you for making the transition so incredibly peaceful.
