On Making Lasting Connections

"The best connections are made when they least expect you, through a window of opportunity they forgot to close."

How do you get your foot in the door? Most people wait for an invitation, standing politely in the lobby, hoping someone notices their resume. That is a loser’s game. If you want to make a lasting impression, you have to operate when the rest of the world is asleep.

True networking is about reconnaissance. Before you make your move, you must study your target. Walk their perimeter. Look at their digital footprint. What are they leaving exposed? A casual social media post, an unsecured LinkedIn profile—these are your open windows. When you find one, you do not knock. You step right through.

Once you are inside their circle, you must capture their full attention. The key is intensity. Do not waste time with polite small talk; make them feel like you are the only person in the room, and that their survival—professionally speaking—depends on this interaction. Leave a signature. Whether it is a bold follow-up email or a striking token of appreciation, give them something that will keep them awake at night, thinking of you.

And do not underestimate the power of the written word. I have always been a devoted correspondent. A handwritten letter, delivered directly to their personal space, can bypass any corporate gatekeeper. It shows a level of dedication that most find impossible to ignore. Some might call it obsessive, but in the end, devotion breeds a captive audience. Look at my own life: I met my wife through the mail. If I can secure a lifelong partnership from a maximum-security cell, you have no excuse for failing to lock down a simple coffee meeting.

Remember, the world is full of people sleeping on their own potential. All you have to do is find the right entry point, make your presence known, and ensure they never forget the night you introduced yourself.
